TRANSCRIPT:

Eco-Products is a leading brand of environmentally responsible foodservice packaging.

Everything we make comes with real environmental benefits but lots of companies do that…what makes us so special?

Eco-Products is more than just a packaging company we're a true sustainability partner.

We’re mission driven.

The majority of our products are made with renewable resources or post-consumer recycled content. Many of those products are compostable or recyclable. We also have a line of reusable products that have their own collection and tracking system. The term zero waste is literally in our mission and vision statements.

We’re a B Corp.

This third-party certification for social and environmental performance proves that we are “walking-the-talk" and pushes us to be the best we can be.

Bundle: We have the broadest bundle of green packaging available. For operators who are composting it's crucial they use only compostables. That way customers can throw everything into one bin, the compost bin, along with food scraps, and reduce the risk of contamination. That's just one of the reasons having more than 400 items matters to customers.

Innovation: We aren’t satisfied with the status quo. Our award-winning product team and cutting-edge development stay ahead of customer demand and changing regulations.

Services: We have a whole staff of experts who can help our customers with sustainability goals, waste diversion, and compliance. We offer marketing and sustainability services at no extra charge. Want a custom poster or table tent? How about a custom product? Or even Product Carbon Footprint Analysis? By offering marketing and sustainability services at no additional charge we help our customers meaningfully incorporate green into their brands.

Advocacy: We are committed to solving the world’s waste problems and supporting a more circular economy. That's why Eco-Products works with other industry leaders on increasing access to composting and recycling, and improving waste diverting systems. We’re members of multiple industry organizations pushing for change.

When it comes to green packaging Eco-Products can confidently say “we got this” in a way no other packaging company can.

Let us be your partner.

COMPANY

B Corp Certification

June 12, 2024 • 2:36 min

TRANSCRIPT:

Third-party certification for compostability is just what it sounds like – an organization other than the company selling the product has verified that it meets certain standards.

Some of the entities that require third-party verification include composters, haulers, foodservice customers of all kinds, and even a few states.

Third-party certification is the best way to distinguish between legitimate compostable products, and “lookalike” packaging that is made to look compostable, but may contain ingredients that prevent it from breaking down.

In North America, the Biodegradable Products Institute or BPI is the leading authority on compostable products, and has been certifying products for commercial compostability for over 25 years.

In order for an item to be BPI-Certified, it must meet ASTM standards for compostability, be free of intentionally added Pee-fahs, be labeled with the BPI Certification Mark, and be associated with food.

Testing for BPI-Certification happens in labs under conditions that approximate real world composting environments. This makes the tests reliable and repeatable across the nearly 30,000 items that BPI certifies.

The Composting Manufacturing Alliance or CMA provides field testing designed to give composters an idea of how a product will perform in specific composting technologies like windrow and aerated static - pile.

These tests can be valuable, but have proved difficult to replicate in the highly variable environments they take place in.

Eco-Products works extensively with both organizations and has the widest array of BPI-Certified and CMA Approved items available anywhere.

Contamination Ruins Compost

June 12, 2024 • 2:36 min

TRANSCRIPT:

Hi everybody my name is Clinton Sander I am the marketing manager for A1 Organics we are located here in Colorado, and we are the largest commercial compost manufacturer in the state.

The way organic material comes to A1 Organics it will come in a very large load it's all co-mingled, so it could be yard trimmings, food waste, it can be compostables, it's all mixed into one blend.

When it shows up like this and there's contamination in here as you can see, it's really challenging and difficult to remove these materials from the entire pile.

What are the most common contaminants that we're seeing coming in the stream? Different types of lightweight plastics, chip bags, blue rubber gloves, hard plastic, glass, and metals.

This is a glass bottle that's going to shatter into thousands of little pieces. Then you have your real random ones that is not compostable that is not a material that we'd like. Is this compostabl?e

Contamination causes such impact and the easiest way to solve it is at the beginning in the smallest bin. Get it out. Don't put it in there. It just goes all the way and causes all this challenge. The only way we're going to be able to continue to support this specific stream is that contamination has to be removed at the beginning.

I'm sitting here looking at some amazing beautiful composting process, by the way it's really hot which is really awesome. Mother nature doing it it's work right here.

We're creating an amazing finished product that provides so much benefit to the environment, but if contamination is in it it's just going to stop this whole process. It starts with you at the beginning, don't put anything in there that doesn't belong.

LEGISLATION

Product Labeling in CO & WA

July 25, 2024 • 1:40 min

TRANSCRIPT:

Contamination from non-compostable products is one of the biggest challenges composters face.

In 2024, Washington and Colorado both passed labeling laws for compostable products. These laws are designed to make it easier to tell the difference between compostable and non-compostable products by requiring that certain labeling elements be present on the compostable versions.

While there are some differences between the two states, the basics of the laws are: The laws apply to products that are made from bioplastics, like clear cups, containers, and cutlery, or products that are lined with bioplastics, like paper hot cups and soup cups.

They do not apply to unlined molded fiber items, and other items that are made exclusively from fiber or wood. All products affected by the laws must feature the word “Compostable” and a third-party certification logo verifying that the item meets ASTM compostability standards.

In Washington, affected products must feature green, brown, or beige material color or tint, or they must have a green, beige, or brown stripe at least a quarter inch wide.

In Colorado, affected products must feature green symbols, colors, tinting, marks or design patterns. Additionally, they must not display a chasing arrow resin identification code or recycling symbol.

The Veridian product line was specifically developed to create compliant options for affected product categories like clear cups, clear containers, cutlery, and more. To learn more about Veridian, go to ecoproducts.com/veridian

CIRC Program

October , 202• 1:32 min

TRANSCRIPT:

I'm Wendell from Eco-Products.

Contamination from non-compostable products is one of the biggest challenges composters face. In a lot of cases it prevents them from accepting food scraps and even certified compostable packaging.

That's why we think a systems approach is needed at the generator level — so think restaurants stadiums venues and other foodservice environments — and that's what this CIRC program is all about.

CIRC stands for Controls Intended to Remove Contamination and its objectives are three fold:

1. To systematically control and mitigate contamination from non-compostable products

2. To increase composter confidence in post-consumer organic streams

3. To demonstrate that A System's approach can work at scale across different food service environments

CIRC is not a certification program nor will it cost you anything to participate in. It is an open sourced score card system looking at procurement, operations, communications, and the way that the foodservice industry interacts with composters and haulers.

Over the last 6 months we've gotten feedback from composters, haulers, generators, and lots of others to see how feasible this set of controls really is. Now we're ready to roll it out to see if we can start cleaning up the compost stream across the country

If you think the CIRC program is a good fit for you, please let us know. We'd love to have you join us on the journey toward a cleaner organic stream the composters will be legitimately excited to accept

AZ Wilderness Brewing

December 4, 2023 • 4:11 min

TRANSCRIPT:

Hey, I'm Jonathan Buford the founder of Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company. I did not love seeing trash cans full of waste. I did not love seeing the amount of plastic going out. We believe that your product should turn to soil and that soil should grow new food and the consumer eating that food we believe that that's how we can save the world

Hi, my name is JD I started R City in 2013. We're here at our farm where we do the composting. R City picks up residential and commercial food waste.

We collect 100% of food waste and then all certified compostable dishware. We've been working with Arizona Wilderness since 2015. They're one of the few that has really gone all compostable, which really makes the system work because it eliminates all the contamination. So it's been great.

We are a conservation-based brewery focused on utilizing Arizona ingredients in our food and beer. We have the Gilbert Brew Pub, which we are at now, the Wood Note Cellar, which is our spontaneous fermentation barrel aging facility, and the downtown Phoenix European Style Beer Garden.

We are diverting all of our food waste and paper waste from the landfill into the Recycled City compost bins. They pick up weekly and turn our food waste and paper waste into soil, which they then grow produce from and sell to their retail subscribers and we are offering in our menu today in the form of a Kerns of pasta with their summer squash.

When I started R City in 2013 I wanted to provide an option that would accept all compostable dishware sorestaurants and places could go zero waste. Eco-Products has been a company that I've been referring for almost 10 years now. They've got everything that somebody would need to really transition.

So here at Eco-Products we have Product and Zero Specialists that are experts in the field, connecting our customers to composters and haulers and making sure that the whole system works. Contamination is the biggest problem that composters face. It's extremely hard to remove once it's in the pile. So we really try to work with our composters and make sure we know what works and what breaks down in their systems, and then take that information back to our customers. So everybody's using certified compostables that we all know to break down in the composting system, so everything can be circular and reduce the amount of products we send to the trash.

Here we are we have a scratch kitchen so all of our food is never frozen, never microwaved. It's all hand cut hand trimmed. So if there's any excess product that makes it into our compost stations and then again is turned into soil at Recycled City.

So as we started to research how to get these products to go out in compostable goods, Eco is the first that we found. And and we've been using them for quite some time and we're really proud of it. Another exciting thing is that they offer customizable solutions. So we have have customizable to-go containers, customizable soup containers, so it helps us with our branding. Once the product leaves our building it still is sharing the message of what we believe is the right thing to do, which is composting your food waste.

The act of composting by our guests and our team furthers our mission, furthers our story and allows people to see it in action to let them know that they are making a difference by eating at Arizona wilderness. Choosing Eco-Products, using Recycled City, because with their purchase at our company they are supporting and voting with their dollar to make a difference in the world.

Moda Center

July 24, 2024 • 2:27 min

TRANSCRIPT:

The composting program here at Moda Center is a 14-year-old program and it's extremely important to our zero waste strategy.

Our partnership with Eco-Products really supports our procurement for compostable products and making sure everything in the arena is either compostable, recyclable, or reusable, and we are sending minimal items to landfill.

Since this particular program started, we've worked on creating custom signage for them to put in their sorting area with photos of the individual Eco-Products so that their waste sorting team can quickly identify them.

We've provided lots of samples to Levy to make sure that they get the compostable products that they need, but that are also going to be accepted by their composter and easy to identify. It's been a seamless transition it's been great to be able to partner with Eco-Products using them on our concession side and also on our premium side in Portland.

In general it's a very Earth friendly environment and community and so I think our fans are definitely really receptive to it.

Compostables really help with gathering more food waste from front of house, because it makes it simple and easy for our fans to put all of their items into a single stream when they are done with their food.

So you might think that compostables and reusables can't maybe coexist in single venue, but we've actually found it to be very successful using reusables for select high volume items like our cups to help just reduce single use items in general and reduce our overall waste.

Whereas the compostables really help us capture all that food waste and get that into the compost stream. So they've been coexisting very well together. And that's why we love partnering with Eco-Products. Because they were very excited and supportive of our reusable program and excited to see it being working in tandem with compost.

I'm a fifth generation Oregonian and I've been coming to Blazers game since Clyde Drexler is playing in the Coliseum, so it is great to see this program really be such a leader nationally and what waste diversion and what zero waste can look like. It's important to me as an Oregonian that this was first.

Better Earth Logistics

We're a custom hauling service where we're taking food waste away from the landfill and bringing it out to the Compost Facility here in Peoria, Illinois and turning it into compost.

So do we have problems with compostable products breaking down in our facility? No, they all break down well whether it be a liner whether it be a clamshell, forks, spoons, knives - all of them.

They all break down really well there are a lot of times where if a clamshell is compostable it makes it in there and you know it's got half eaten food or it's got a little bit of remnants. So we are getting a lot more food waste because we accept compostable products.
